CARBON FOOTPRINT

what we have done

  • Built Recycling bins into the kitchen design for easy sorting and removal (very well organised recycling centre 4 kms away in Sinies).

  • Installed dishwashers in both kitchens because they are more efficient than washing up.

  • Replaced white paint in swimming pool with dark porcelain tiles to absorb and hold heat. When the air temp is 34 degrees centigrade, the pool will be around 29 degrees! For cooler months, the pool is still warmer than most but is not heated.

  • Improved rain storage system but still rely on mains water in the summer which is sporadic and sometimes shipped over from the mainland and delivered by large diesel trucks. If daily showers are under 3mins, we can manage on rain storage tanks.

  • Drinking water storage in kitchen so that plastic bottle purchasing is not necessary. Large containers provided to fill easily at Sinies.

  • Soon to install solar panels for hot water (unfortunately prevented in Greece from installing solar panels for electricity)

  • We do not take bookings for less than a week to reduce incentive for flights.

  • Employed Jennie Gaye (garden designer) who has developed a sustainable system for dry Mediterranean gardens. You will see an irrigation system for limited dripping over two years by which time the plants should have deep roots and take care of themselves!

what we ask guests to do

  • Save water – by limiting shower times, using the dishwashers and only using the washing machine if absolutely essential.

  • Use fans instead of Air conditioning to save power.
